Mission Statement: Appalachian’s Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology is devoted to the study of human communication and associated disorders and prepares clinicians for work in a variety of settings – schools, hospitals, nursing homes, community clinics, home health and private practice.

Students gain the academic and clinical practicum experiences necessary for certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, and advanced licensure by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

Location: Boone, NC

Length of Program for Out-of-Field Students: 2 years 6 month program….. for example Summer (online) 2020-> December 2022

Degree: Masters of Speech Language Pathology

Number of Times you have to Apply for Speech Program as Out of Field Student: 1 time (some schools make you take the pre-requisite classes then apply to program but this one doesn’t)

 

Pre-requisite Courses:

  • Biological Science (e.g., biology, human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, human genetics, veterinary science)

  • Physical Science (should include physics or chemistry)

  • Social Sciences (should include psychology, sociology, anthropology, or public health)

  • Statistics (stand-alone course in statistics is required, research methodology courses in CSD may not be used)

Out-of-Field Required Classes/ Leveling Program:

  • CSD 2260 Anatomy & Physiology of Speech & Hearing Mechanism

  • CSD 2361 Phonetics

  • CSD 2464 Basic Speech Hearing Science

  • CSD 3366 Communication Development (or language development)

  • CSD 4162 Structural Analysis of Language (or a linguistics course)

  • CSD 4662 Management of Hearing Disorders

  • CSD 4766 Neuroanatomy

  • CSD 5364 Audiology

  • Prior to entry students must provide documentation of 25 hours of supervised clinical observation

Needed Application Essentials:

  • GRE needed

  • 3 Letters of Recommendation (faculty members preferred)

  • Resume

  • Personal Statement: 1 page in length

  • 3.0 GPA

  • Answering 5 questions of theirs

  • They recommend 3.3 GPA
